Say Goodbye To Insomnia! How We Fixed Our Sleeping Issues
Not being able to sleep really sucks! And not only that, it’s really bad for your health. Our bodies do their healing and repair while we’re in deep sleep. So if you’re not getting that deep, restorative sleep, your body isn’t repairing itself. But it’s common for people to have sleeping issues as they age, and my husband and I were no exceptions.
The truth is that three years ago, our sleep wasn’t great. We’d go to bed, and it would often take me ages to get to sleep, even though I was tired. I’d be tossing and turning, while hubby would roll over and be asleep in seconds. It was so frustrating! He’d be snoring as I lay there, frustrated by my inability to fall asleep quickly as he did.
But it wasn’t all roses for hubby!
He’d be awake at 3 am and would end up getting up because he’d then be the one tossing and turning, unable to get back to sleep.
In fact, he was becoming so sleep deprived that he was falling asleep often during the day and even nodding off while eating meals. This was really unusual for him. Historically, it’s always been me who nods off as soon as I stop moving. (The ability to sleep anywhere kind of runs in my family…) And I was getting worried about him.
Amongst all that, we also used to be up two or three times every night to pee, which of course disturbed our limited sleep and contributed to us feeling even more tired in the morning.
We ditched the plants and got better sleep!
Two and a half years ago, I switched to a mostly carnivore diet that sometimes included a small amount of berries and/or fermented veggies. Hubby soon followed my lead and switched to the same diet, but with the addition of homemade sourdough bread, some honey and a bit more fruit at times.
Our diet before this had been very clean and very highly plant-based. We ate a lot of organic and home-grown produce, and very little in the way of ultra-processed foods.
Within a couple of weeks of ditching the plants, we both noticed that our sleep improved.
We found that the toilet trips reduced to once per night, or sometimes none, and our sleep quality improved. I was falling asleep more easily. But he was still waking too early, and we’d both often feel like we hadn’t had quite enough sleep.
So we were still looking for answers.
Enter the grounding sheet
I’d been diving into information about the benefits of grounding for quite a number of years. I actually purchased my first grounding products, a mouse pad and a larger mat that now lives under my computer keyboard, way back around 2010.
Grounding products were much more expensive back then! Today, they’re more affordable, and you can buy two mats like my large one, plus grounding wrist bands from Amazon for about $50. Now, because hubby was still having problems staying asleep, I’d been toying with the idea of buying a grounding sheet for the bed. They’re a bit more of an outlay. But I figured that whether it helped him to stay in bed longer or not, it was going to be beneficial for our health to be grounded while we slept. So I bit the bullet and bought one.
And it worked! Or at least it did to an extent…
The first night with the grounding sheet on the bed, he slept until 7 am! He hadn’t done that for a few years, so that was a minor miracle. But what we found over time was that although things definitely improved and he now had some nights where he slept until daybreak, he still had nights where he’d wake at 3 am. It was officially a partial success…
